I am paying for the subscription, and this is a great app. However, even with no background noise to interfere, it often freezes, or does not register that I am on a new page. You may get the same sound effect for 3-5 pages before it adjusts. Pro is you can restart and read from the page you left off on quickly, and it usually works. I will remain subscribed because I believe it has more pros than the one con I experience. Hoping to fix the voice recognition issues in their future app updates.

As an elementary school librarian I've used Novel Effect. for many years. I've found that out of the three ways I can use it: phone app (Android), Chromebook App, or web based, only the Chromebook app works correctly 100% of the time. The other two ways tend to freeze up and just play music for the rest of the story. I feel for people who get it to use on phone and don't get the proper experience. At $50 a year, it should work. It's a read aloud game changer when it does.

I use this app multiple times a day as an elementary school librarian. It never fails to help grab the student's attention and hold it during story time. Even our upper grades (5-6) love to hear the stories with the music and sound effects added. I can't recommend this app enough! For optimal usage, I connect a Bluetooth speaker to my phone and set the speaker a short distance away to prevent the sounds from overwhelming the input on my phone. Keeps everything flowing just right!
